Lesson Notes

(A 6min read)

I see many marketers make the mistake of never shutting up about their business. It’s like they are NOT even human anymore!  And while talking about your business can help with:

  • Positioning yourself as an expert.
  • Educating your prospect, and warm them up.
  • Be easily leveraged into leads and sales.

It can also lead to your followers muting you out.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s very important to create content around your solutions. If you are a copywriter, and you have a program for beginner copywriters creating such content will help you to attract and spot the people who might later become your clients. But talking about your business too much can hurt your business… But why is that?! The truth is that people tend to mute businesses, and not to engage with them as much. We turn to social media in order to socialize with their friends, colleagues, and family, and not to just consume value. We don’t enjoy interacting with the Nike business page as much as we enjoy communicating with our friends…

And if you will just talk about your business 100% of the time, you will eventually be seen as a weird two-legged brand… People will tune you out… Engaging with you might become a task they no longer enjoy… But that’s not all… We are barely scratching the surface…

The even uglier truth is that by talking business, and never sharing the ‘behind the brand’, you are actually making it impossible for people to relate, and connect with you at a deeper level! You will be surprised at how many people will be withdrawn to you if only you shared your personality with them… Humans are wired to connect with those that are similar to them.

But for that to happen, they need to know more than just your business… To spice things up, and make sure you are establishing a true connection with your target audience, I would encourage to start sharing the following:

  • Your likes & dislikes.
  • The things you stand for.
  • Your favorite books, shows, movies…
  • Your vision, and goals.
  • Your hobbies.
  • Personal stories.
  • Your family/social life
  • Your failures
  • Your day-to-day activities.

Yes, even your dislikes!  It was Blair Warren who said: “People will do anything for those who encourage their dreams, justify their failures, allay their fears, confirm their suspicions, and help them throw rocks at their enemies.” And it couldn’t be more accurate in my opinion.

You will become surprised at how fast a relationship can be built around sports teams, political views, or hobbies.  And before you say “But Daniel, I fear that some might not appreciate it”, I would like to tell you about a marketing concept called the “Prolific zone”, which I was first introduced to in Russell Brunson’s book the ‘Expert Secrets’

In short, Too many people are staying natural nowadays just because they don’t want to upset anyone. They put so many filters around them, that it becomes almost impossible for them to publish anything… And even if they do get to post something, the voice was altered, it’s no longer the same or even recognizable…

They don’t show the behind the scenes because they fear some might not like it. But the truth is, that this act makes them transparent. It’s kinda like the shy boy in class who will just agree with you on everything just to make you like him. As sad as it is, it is true, no one likes that…

People are attracted to the ones who similar to them, and by you refusing to show your true self, you are making it impossible for others to notice the real you. And that’s the ONLY way to form your tribe, and connect with your true fans!

And yes, by creating polarity if you will face people who don’t appreciate you too, but you shouldn’t care about them because they never liked you to begin with. Dan Kennedy said “If you haven’t offended someone by noon each day, then you aren’t marketing hard enough” It doesn’t matter who I will pick, if they made enough impact, they are going to have some haters…

From Tony Robbins to Selena Gomez, they all have haters, and so will you… And it doesn’t matter how kind, patient, or nice you will be… If you are aiming for true impact, then you will have to handle criticism, hate, and negativity… It’s a part of business, and there is so way around it.

Homework

So here is your assignment: Start thinking about ways in which you can share the ‘behind the brand’ stories in your life, and add some ‘you’ into your content. I find stories the best way to do that (Work for IG & FB), and if you aren’t consistent with your stories, I would recommend you to start TODAY!

KEy Takeaways / Quotes

By being nurutral, you are actually making yourself transperent, and deny the opportunity for your audience to connect with you at a deeper level.

It's very important to create content around your solutions, so you can attract the right type of people.

If you haven’t offended someone by noon each day, then you aren’t marketing hard enough
